The Fall Of CSK & MI:

This year’s IPL has been a surprising one and a different one too. Surprising because the two GIANTS of the Indian Premier League were rotting at the 9th and 10th spot; different because for the first time since 2016, some other team is most likely to win this year’s IPL because if you go back 5 years ago in 2017 MI won, 2018 CSK won, 2019 MI won, 2020 MI won and 2021 CSK won. So this year will be different because a different team might win for the first time in 6 years. This post, we will be talking about the fall of these two teams.

CSK THIS SEASON-

CSK have undoubtedly had the worst season until now they lost the worst 4 matches in a row and won the fifth, lost the 6th, won the 7th, lost the 8th, won the 9th, lost the 10th, won the 11th, lost the 12th (Their worst loss since 2013, when they lost against MI when they got all-out for 79), lost their 13th, and ___ their 14th. They ended the season with ____ points. This year was nothing less than a nightmare for them.

MI THIS SEASON-

MI are no less; they lost their first 8 matches in a row and finally won their 9th match against Rajasthan Royals. I am sure no one expected such an awful start by maybe the greatest team in IPL history so far. This year was nothing less than a nightmare for them.

The fact that two of the leading teams of the IPL, led by great players like Rohit, Jadeja and Dhoni, make it even more disappointing.

Let’s look at what went so wrong for both teams.

CSK:

To start with the auction. CSK’s picks at the options were extremely terrible. I didn’t understand the logic when they could pay 15CR for Deepak Chahar, who was at the time injured and not sure if he could play the IPL (He didn’t pay anyways) and not even pay 10 crores for Faf Du Plessis, who was almost the leading run scorer the previous year, and Faf has a good amount of captaincy experience with him because he captained SA for few years also. It just doesn’t make sense! If they had retained or bought him in the auction, their IPL could have been 10 times better. And the rest of the picks were also really bad. They could have bought experienced bowlers or bowlers who have done good in the past year (international); yes, they wanted a young team, but it’s not like everyone who plays international is above 35 years old. In my opinion, their only good picks at this auction were Devon Conway, Mukesh Choudhary, Pathirana, Rajvardhan Hangrekar (even though they didn’t make him play) and Maheesh Theekshana. And I also didn’t understand why they didn’t let Rajvardhan Hangrekar play. This is what the coach of CSK, Steven Flemming, said when a reporter asked him this question.

I know he’s (Rajvardhan) performed at the Under-19 level, but this is a step up,” Fleming said, as quoted by the official website of CSK. “We’re very conscious of the skills that he needs to perform. We don’t wanna just throw him in and damage him. We want to make sure we realise the potential that he’s got,” he added.

Flemming-

Okay, so I have two things to say. If you didn’t realise his potential, then why would you buy him in the auction?

He says he doesn’t want to damage him, he says that Hangrekar isn’t quite ready for this level. How are Mukesh Choudhary, Tushar Deshpande and all ready for IPL then? Maybe they may have played cricket 2 or 3 years more than Hangrekar; they may be older than him, but if Hangrekar had played in the U19 World Cup, he would know how to handle big match situations much better, Mukesh or Tushar. How would you know if he is ready if you give him a chance? CSK’s lower order was very weak this year. He would have been that game-changer. No one could bat after Dhoni and maybe Bravo in the lower order. Hangrekar could have been the game changer.

Few people say that if Deepak Chahar were in the squad, they would have won many more matches. Okay, it’s not like Deepak Chahar is a god. Yes, Deepak Chahar can be a game changer, but it’s not like with him; we could have won every match. But yes, if Chahar was there, even I agree that we could have had a better season.

This year, CSK’s players were not u to the mark. They just weren’t the better side in most of the matches.

The only players who performed well this year- were Devon Conway towards the end, Mukesh Choudhary, Shivam Dube, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu a bit, Dwayne Bravo and THALA DHONI!

Now its MI time-

MI:

MI had a terrible season this year. Their first-ever season so far, but to be honest, their picks at the auction were pretty good. They weren’t bad at all. They couldn’t be the better team on occasion and just didn’t play well enough, but these types of things happen. Their players have had international experience (including U-19), but the problem is the senior players didn’t step up on that day. For example-

Rohit Sharma– Rohit had a terrible year with the bat. He couldn’t score a single 50 this year and has gotten out before 20-30 runs in most matches. His batting was utterly disappointing.

Jasprit Bumrah– Bumrah had a decent IPL season in 2022. He performed extremely well in a few of the matches, but he disappointed us a bit in a few of them. This wasn’t his greatest IPL season, for sure.

Kieron Pollard– Pollard, hmmm. What can I say about him? To start with, his batting was very disappointing. When we think of Pollard, the first thing that comes to mind is that BIG SIX HITTER who can turn the match is 15-20 balls. But this season, that Pollard just couldn’t come out! It was exactly like when THE HULK couldn’t come out of Bruce Banner in Avengers Infinity War. No matter how many Banner tried, hulk didn’t come out; same story here, no matter how many pollards tried, the BIG SIX HITTER Pollard couldn’t come. Even if would hit a six, which would he huge, of course, he would get out 1-2 balls later.

Though, few players had an exceptional season. Examples include Tim David, Daniel Sams, Tilak Varma and Jaydev Unadkat. So, maybe it was all about how they played that particular day. Maybe luck wasn’t on their side this year.
