Hey guys, welcome back to my blog, SlogVlog! In today’s post, I’ll give you a tutorial on how we play a backfoot defence. Let’s start!

Step 1: Take your guard:
In cricket there are 3 stumps, the leg stump, middle stump and the off stump.

First take your guard, stand either at leg stump or middle stump. Never stand at off stump because there is a high chance of you getting out via LBW. After taking your guard, get ready to face the ball.
Step 2: Watch the ball and then move your foot:
Now, many times in cricket, we without watching the ball try to anticipate whether it will be a short ball, or a full length etc. Don’t do that. Always watch the ball till the end, until it hits your bat.
Step 3: Shift your weight to the back-foot:
Once you know its going to be a short ball, quickly, shift the weight to your back foot. Something like this-

Here we can see that the batsman is shifting his weight on to the back-foot and is getting ready to hit the ball.
Step 4: Move your foot towards the off-stump:
Now, you have to move your foot towards the off stump, so that you can play the ball. Why, you may ask, when you move your foot towards the off stump you kind of create more space to hit the short. Suppose there is a bit of extra bounce on the ball, you then have enough space to play a pull shot then.

In this image you can see after transfering his weight towards the backfoot he is moving his leg towards the off stump and is in the second stage of getting ready to play the ball.
Step 5: Execute the shot:
Now comes the last step, executing the shot. Once you have shifted your weight to the backfoot and you have moved your foot towards the off stump and you are ready to execute the shot, with soft hands play the shot. The defense and drive shots, no matter whether its back-foot or front-foot, you have to play with soft hands, and keep your top hand firm (Your left hand if you are a right handed batsman and your right hand if you are a left handed batsman) and play the shot. If you keep your bottom hand firm (your main hand) then there is a possibility of it hitting the bat and going into the air and going straight into the fielders hands.
Also don’t keep the bat too close to your body, because then the ball may hit the top of your bat or the bottom of your bat, and also when you keep it too close to your body, your hand automatically stiffens and you won’t be able to hit the shot as cleanly as you wanted, it as I told you earlier, the ball may hit the bat and go into the air also, if your hand it very stiff.

This is a perfect back-foot defence, the body wright is shifted to the back-foot and the foot is moves towards the off stump and bat isn’t too close to the body, bat is in the perfect position.
So yeah, thats it for this post.
Until Next Time!
