Tata IPL M33: MS Dhoni vs Rohit Sharma? The El Clásico returns

The most heated, the greatest rivalry of the IPL returns, as two of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League—Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings—face off at the Wankhede Stadium. These two teams have dominated the league since its inception in 2008. Eighteen seasons in, and 10 trophies have been shared between these two heavyweights.

This rivalry truly began to take shape in the 2010s, when CSK defeated MI in the final, and since then, three of MI’s five titles have come from beating CSK in the final. What makes this clash even more exciting is the possibility of two icons returning to the field—MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. These two players have dominated the IPL in ways we didn’t think were possible. They made winning the IPL look effortless.

And when these two icons step onto the field (hopefully), the crowd is going to go absolutely insane. So, without further ado, welcome back to SlogVlog! In today’s post, we’ll be bringing you a full preview and everything you need to know before the El Clásico of the IPL unfolds at the Wankhede Stadium tonight.

In the Spotlight- MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma:

All eyes are on two of the IPL’s greatest captains, as MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma may make their return to the playing XI in today’s game. These two stalwarts are massive positives for their teams—Rohit Sharma brings stability and intent at the top of the order, while MS Dhoni’s game awareness and tactical brilliance are exactly what CSK need right now.

We’ve been seeing MS Dhoni practice in the nets ever since CSK’s abysmal loss against RR in their season opener. CSK have been posting videos of him hitting massive sixes, giving fans hope that he will return in the next game. But that “next game” kept getting pushed forward, right up until their last match against SRH, where it genuinely felt like, “Agar Dhoni hota toh hum ye match jeet jaate.”

MS Dhoni’s inclusion in the side is a genuine boost for the men in yellow, and everyone will be hoping to witness that iconic walk one more time at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit Sharma has missed MI’s last two games after suffering an injury against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, that hasn’t stopped him from continuing his batting practice, as he has been undergoing light sessions during his rehab period. In his absence, Danish Malewar came into the side but failed to make much of an impact in his first game against GT.

MI will be hoping Rohit Sharma returns soon, because with him, you get the complete package—an explosive opener and a player with elite cricketing knowledge.

Pitch and Weather Conditions:

Over recent matches, Pitch 7 at the Wankhede has defied the venue’s reputation in multiple ways. It hasn’t been particularly high-scoring (the last six T20s here have produced an average first-innings total of 179), it has tended to favour the team batting first (four wins and two losses in these six games, with the run rate dipping from 8.98 in the first innings to 8.57 in the second), and spinners have been significantly more economical (economy rate of 7.71) than the fast bowlers (9.38). For all that, though, the team winning the toss is still likely to want to chase given Mumbai’s propensity for dew, which will be heightened by daytime temperatures approaching the mid-30s (Celsius).

Prediction:

Both teams have found some form. CSK faced a slight setback after losing to SRH in their last game, but they didn’t play bad cricket. Their bowling was incredibly good—restricting SRH to 194 in Hyderabad in a night game isn’t easy. They did well to recover after the initial onslaught.

In their batting, if the openers get going—especially captain Ruturaj Gaikwad—then they look well set. Yes, Ayush Mhatre being ruled out is a setback for the men in yellow, but they have Urvil Patel, who is a promising talent as we saw last year. He could be the right man to replace Mhatre, so that might not be a major concern. And with a strong possibility of MS Dhoni returning, CSK’s lower middle order gets a significant boost.

MI, on the other hand, lost four on the trot but reminded everyone how dangerous they can be after dismantling GT’s batting lineup. Tilak Varma returning to form is a huge positive, especially since their batting hasn’t been consistent this season. However, the concern remains that MI’s batting lineup still doesn’t look stable. They need more of their batters to find form as the tournament progresses. If a few more players click and their bowling continues the way it did against GT, we could see a strong MI comeback.

On paper, and based on recent results, this feels like a 50-50 contest—an absolute neutral matchup. But over the course of the tournament, MI have looked slightly less stable than CSK. CSK haven’t been perfect either, but right now, they do appear a bit more settled. Bowling-wise, both teams have done well recently. Batting-wise, however, CSK have had the edge—and at the Wankhede, batting often makes the difference.
