Another high-scoring game in the Tata IPL yesterday, as DC chased down RR’s target of 226 with ease, rewriting franchise history—this is now Delhi’s highest successful chase in the IPL.
There were a few positives for RR. Their middle order looks more stable now, with Donovan Ferreira contributing, but the biggest takeaway is Riyan Parag finding form. After struggling for most of the season, the Royals’ captain finally delivered—and that’s huge for RR. As they say, better late than never.
Parag’s innings was a delight to watch. His timing and power were on point as he played a full range of shots—from powerful hits across the line to elegant straight and lofted drives. It was a composed knock of 90, anchoring the innings and taking RR to a strong total—one they ultimately couldn’t defend.
For Delhi, this was a much-needed win, both for team morale and their playoff hopes. After conceding 265 against PBKS and then suffering a heavy defeat to RCB at home, they needed a response—and they delivered.
There were plenty of positives. Mitchell Starc returned to the side and, despite being a bit expensive, picked up three crucial wickets—Jaiswal, Parag, and Jadeja. And then there was KL Rahul. Pure class. His 75 was calm, controlled, and match-winning, guiding DC to victory and earning him a well-deserved Player of the Match award.
On to tonight’s game—the El Clásico returns to the MA Chidambaram Stadium as CSK and MI face off one last time this season. Both teams need a win, and it all comes down to who wants it more and who’s willing to fight harder for it.
Hopefully, we’re in for one of those classic CSK vs MI battles that we all know and love.

Pitch and Weather Conditions:
We saw how awkward the pitch played last Sunday when CSK faced GT. The CSK batters struggled to read both the surface and the bowlers, resulting in 66 dot balls in their innings. In today’s game, you rarely see that many dot balls across multiple matches combined—yet CSK still managed to post 158.
However, tonight’s match won’t be played on that same surface. Instead, it will be on a pitch that should be far more batting-friendly. You can expect a high-scoring contest—maybe not the usual 230–240 totals, but a 200+ score is definitely on the cards. The last game on this track saw PBKS chase down 210 against CSK on April 3.
Coming to the weather, Chennai will be hot and humid as always, with temperatures around 31°C at 8 PM and humidity levels nearing 80%. These conditions won’t be easy for the players, but they will favour the team batting second, as the heavy humidity is likely to bring significant dew into play.
News on MS Dhoni’s recovery:
Having tweaked an already injured calf, according to CSK coach Stephen Fleming, Dhoni is likely to remain on the sidelines. An early stutter on a bouncy track prompted CSK into bringing in Sarfaraz as an extra batter inside the powerplay. If things go to plan, CSK will look to bring back left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary. His Maharashtra team-mate Ramakrishna Ghosh had also measured his run-up against GT last Sunday, and may not be too far away from making his IPL debut.

Here’s what Michael Hussey had to say about MS Dhoni’s recovery:-
“Hopefully, he’ll be back as soon as possible. I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or maybe the next match after that, but he’s progressing really well. I know he’s been upping his running speeds, and that was probably the sticking point. I think we’re very confident from a skill perspective with his batting and his wicketkeeping, but it was just making sure that he could maintain good running power, particularly towards the back end of an inning, where he’s going to have to scan for those and twos. So as soon as he’s got the confidence in his calf, then I’m sure he’ll give it the tick to be ready to go,”
Michael Hussey on why MS Dhoni doesn’t come to the ground on CSK’s Match Days:-
“He’s such a team-oriented guy, MS Dhoni. He always wants what’s best for the team, and he was worried that if he came, there’d be a bit too much of a distraction. Obviously, the cameras would be on him a lot. The crowd would be cheering for him and things like that. And he really wanted the team to just be able to go about their job, do our thing. Whether that’s right or wrong, that’s not my decision to sort of make, but that’s the thinking behind with Dhoni not wanting to come to the matches,”
Prediction:
Two of the greatest teams and fiercest rivals in the IPL go head-to-head in a must-win contest—but who do we pick?
Every year, choosing a winner between CSK and MI is one of the toughest calls. No matter how their seasons are going, they somehow bring out their best when facing each other. It’s like football’s El Clásico—form often goes out the window, and it turns into an all-out battle.
This time, both teams are struggling. But if you look at recent performances, CSK seem to have a slight edge over MI. Neither side has had a great season, but Mumbai’s campaign has been more inconsistent. In terms of overall stability and performances, CSK have been slightly better.
MI, right now, are searching for the right combinations—what works and what doesn’t—and CSK will look to exploit that uncertainty. The pressure of a must-win game only adds to MI’s challenges.
That said, CSK are far from perfect. Their batting hasn’t shown much depth, and if MI’s pace attack—especially bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult—find their rhythm early, they can put CSK under serious pressure. We’ve already seen CSK struggle when early wickets fall.
So while CSK may have the edge on form, MI certainly have the firepower to turn this around. That’s what makes this clash so unpredictable.
Form may favour CSK—but in an El Clásico, nothing is ever predictable when it comes to a CSK vs MI clash. It’s time for War.
Witness the El Clásico one final time this year, as CSK take on MI in Chepauk. Tune into JioHotstar at 7:30 PM IST.
Until next time!
