We are just getting thriller after thriller this season, aren’t we? Yet another last-over classic unfolded in Dharamshala, as Mumbai Indians defeated Punjab Kings while chasing down 201 on the penultimate ball of the match. It was an absolutely brilliant game of cricket.
The momentum kept shifting throughout the chase. At one stage, the game looked firmly in Mumbai’s control, then Punjab pulled things back, then MI regained momentum again, and just when PBKS seemed to be back in the contest, Tilak Varma swung the game decisively in Mumbai’s favour with a sensational innings under pressure.
And we absolutely cannot ignore Shardul Thakur’s contribution either. After Mumbai did not have the best start with the ball, Shardul stepped up brilliantly, picking up a crucial four-wicket haul (4/39) and changing the course of the game with timely breakthroughs.
Mumbai Indians may already be eliminated from the tournament, but they have certainly made life much harder for Punjab Kings. PBKS have now remained stuck on 13 points for their last five matches, and if they genuinely want to finish in the top two, they need to start delivering in crunch moments.
Coming to tonight’s clash, just five days after that thrilling encounter in Chepauk, LSG and CSK are set to run it back — this time in Lucknow. And for Chennai Super Kings, this is nothing short of a must-win game.
Lucknow Super Giants may already be eliminated from the tournament, but they would certainly love to spoil CSK’s playoff hopes after Chennai dealt a major blow to their own qualification chances in the previous meeting. That adds an extra layer of intensity to this contest.
For CSK, the equation is simple — win, or risk falling out of the playoff race entirely. For LSG, it is an opportunity to play freely, entertain their home crowd, and potentially drag another team down with them, and in this case, the team who practically took them out of the playoffs race.
This is a must-win for CSK and a must-watch for everyone else. Let’s see who comes out on top tonight.

Well, it just can’t get any worse for Chennai Super Kings and their fans, can it? The man who has arguably been CSK’s best all-rounder over the last few years—Jamie Overton—has officially been ruled out for the remainder of this IPL season.
CSK have signed South African talent Dian Forrester as a replacement, but he won’t be available for tonight’s game. Matt Henry has been expensive in almost every match he’s played this season, so CSK may look at other options. They could bring in Spencer Johnson, although that would likely weaken their batting depth. They may also bring in Matt Short, given that Ekana’s is a slower pitch compared to other grounds. Matt Short, also brings in the batting advantage.
With injuries continuing to pile up and combinations constantly changing, CSK’s season just keeps getting more complicated.

Pitch and Weather Conditions:
The game will be played on Pitch no. 4, which has hosted two low-scoring games in IPL 2026. LSG have struggled on this particular track this year, getting bowled out for 141 and 119 in those matches, with both ending in defeat. Fast bowlers accounted for 23 of the 30 wickets that fell in those games. In all IPL games since 2024 on this track, spinners have been only marginally more economical than fast bowlers (economy rate of 9.35 for spinners vs 9.51 for fast bowlers).

Speaking about the weather, it’s an extremely scorching day in Lucknow, with an excessive heat warning in place. Temperatures had climbed to nearly 38°C–40°C a few hours before the match and are expected to gradually drop to around 32°C by the time the game begins.
Conditions are once again going to be tough for the players, especially with the heat and humidity taking a toll physically. Managing energy levels and staying hydrated could end up being just as important as skill tonight.
Prediction:
Well, we’re backing Chennai Super Kings to take the win in Lucknow. CSK have now won three on the trot and don’t look like a side willing to lose momentum anytime soon. And if you look at Lucknow Super Giants, they’ve struggled for consistency throughout the season. Purely in terms of form, CSK clearly come into this clash with the edge—but let’s analyse it a bit deeper.
As mentioned in the pitch report, the surface being used tonight has already hosted two low-scoring games this season—both of which LSG lost. Their record at home has been disappointing, and on slower pitches like this, variation becomes crucial. LSG do have quality pacers, but surfaces like Ekana reward bowlers with smart changes of pace and quality spin options—something that has been a CSK strength since the very beginning of the IPL. Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein should enjoy these conditions, and one major reason CSK may bring in Matt Short is because of the additional spin option he provides.
That said, they may also consider bringing in Spencer Johnson because, while slower conditions traditionally favour spinners, pacers have actually taken the majority of wickets on this surface so far. CSK’s own pacers don’t possess a huge amount of variation, so they may struggle slightly in the wicket-taking department. However, since a high-scoring contest isn’t expected, even tight bowling and pressure-building spells could prove enough. On paper—and especially according to conditions—CSK seem much better suited to this pitch than LSG.
That said, you can never completely rule out the home side. LSG understand these conditions better than anyone, and if they tighten up their bowling slightly, they absolutely have a chance. Their spin department hasn’t been reliable enough this season—Digvesh Rathi has shown promise but has leaked runs at crucial moments. Another concern remains their middle order, which has lacked stability throughout the tournament.
One area they can target, however, is CSK’s own middle order. In their previous match, CSK were cruising at 126/2 after 10 overs, and most teams would have comfortably finished the chase by the 17th or 18th over from there. But a collapse in the middle overs dragged the game all the way to the final over before Shivam Dube finished things off with two huge sixes off Aiden Markram. Yes, breaking their long-standing curse of not chasing 180-plus totals was a massive relief, but the collapse also denied them a significant net run rate boost—something LSG will definitely look to exploit.
Overall though—form-wise, conditions-wise, and squad-wise—CSK simply look like the stronger side heading into this clash, and that’s why we’re backing them to win in Lucknow.
A must win game for the Men in Yellow against LSG, to watch it tune into JioHotstar at 7:30 PM IST.
Until next time!
Thank you.
