What a statement victory to begin their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign for England. They absolutely dismantled both Sri Lanka’s bowling and batting units, piling up a mammoth 219/1 in their 20 overs, with Danni Wyatt-Hodge leading the charge with a magnificent century. From the very start, England looked in complete control, and Sri Lanka simply had no answers to the relentless assault.
And if England’s batting was impressive, their bowling was just as ruthless. Sri Lanka’s batting lineup never really got going in the chase, constantly losing wickets and falling further behind the required rate. Eventually, they were bundled out for just 132, handing the hosts a comprehensive 87-run victory in the opening match of the tournament.
And in a format where Net Run Rate can often decide who progresses and who heads home, this result could prove massive later in the competition. England have given their NRR a huge boost right from Match 1, while Sri Lanka’s has taken a significant hit. It is only one game, but England could hardly have asked for a better start to their World Cup campaign.
Coming on to today, we have a Triple-Header Saturday ahead of us, with three exciting matches lined up throughout the day. And we’ll be starting things off with the first game between Scotland and Ireland. Scotland are playing in just their second ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, while Ireland arrive with a little more experience, making their fifth appearance at the tournament.
This matchup might not have the star power of an India, Australia, or England fixture, but sometimes the best games are the ones that fly under the radar. There is something special about watching two underdog teams battle it out on the biggest stage, both desperate to prove they belong among the world’s best.

Pitch and Weather Conditions:
Another match, and another beautiful cricketing venue in England. For Match 2 of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, the action heads to Old Trafford, where Scotland and Ireland will battle it out in what promises to be an intriguing contest.
The pitch at Old Trafford is generally a good one for batting early on. The bounce is usually consistent and predictable, allowing batters to trust the surface and play their shots. However, this isn’t a venue that remains batter-friendly throughout the entire match. As the innings progresses, the pitch tends to slow down slightly, bringing the spinners into the game and making run-scoring a little more challenging.
Coming to the weather, this could be where things get interesting. Despite being a morning game, with the match starting at 10:30 AM BST, rain is expected throughout much of the morning and afternoon. There is a genuine possibility of interruptions, and in the worst-case scenario, even a washout. If play does go ahead, the teams can expect overcast conditions, which could help the seamers early on. Captains may prefer bowling first if conditions remain overcast, allowing their pace bowlers to make the most of any movement on offer. In English conditions, after rainfall, moisture in the surface and a damp outfield are usually far more important factors than dew, especially in a morning fixture. The extra moisture can assist the seamers early on, while a slower outfield can make boundary-hitting more difficult for the batters.
It’s expected to be a chilly 14°C at toss time in Old Trafford. After spending the last two months watching cricket in the brutal heat of the IPL, it feels strange to call 14°C chilly, but that’s English cricket for you. Different country, different conditions, and in this case, much colder ones.
Prediction:
We’re going with Ireland to take the win in this one. World Cup cricket is a completely different ball game, and more often than not, the teams with greater experience on the biggest stage have a slight edge. Scotland have been playing some excellent cricket recently, but Ireland’s experience gives them a small advantage heading into this clash.
And there’s another reason why we’re backing the Irish. The cricket you play leading into a major tournament is often very important. Scotland’s recent assignments came against Bangladesh and the Netherlands, while Ireland faced Pakistan and the West Indies. The difference in the level of opposition is significant. The West Indies are former World Cup champions, and Ireland not only competed with them, but managed to beat them. That takes quality, confidence, and belief, and it shows that this Irish side has something special about it.
Scotland certainly have the talent to pull off an upset, and they should not be underestimated. But with their World Cup experience, stronger preparation leading into the tournament, and a few impressive results against top opposition, we’re backing Ireland to start their campaign with a victory.
It’s Match No. 2 of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, and we have what promises to be a closely fought battle between Scotland and Ireland. Two ambitious sides, one looking to make a mark in just their second World Cup appearance, and the other hoping to use their experience to get off to the perfect start.
